Bill Balkwill reported that on March 3, 2008, a dozen American Robins were seen with a flock of European Starlings. The shape of the Robins caught Bil's attention as they perched in trees near the patio.
A winter storm on March 8, 2008 attracted Snow Buntings ten at a time to the grain which Jack Balkwill had placed out on the Balkwill residence patio. Bill was unsure of the actual numbers about as others in the flock were on the laneway. As well, about a dozen male Red-winged Blackbirds are present.
Bill reports that the County is full of Horned Larks which may be seen along road edges where the melting snow has revealed gravel.
Bill is unsure of where the hawks will be nesting.
On Sunday, March 9, 2008, Bill observed tiny squirrel tracks in the woodland snow. The squirrel had descended a tree, then walked on the snow's surface. This is the first evidence of South Flying Squirrels in the Balkwill Woodland in several years. Bill commented that the tracks of Red Squirrel are tiny as well. Bill was about twelve years old when that species was last seen in the Balkwill Woodland.
On March 12, 2008, a large flock of one hundred Common Grackles was observed on the Balkwill Lands, along with Red-winged Blackbirds.
