Balkwill Lands Contribute to the Annual Cedar Creek Christmas Bird Count

The twenty-third annual Cedar Creek Christmas Bird Count (CBC) was held on December 16, 2007. The Cedar Creek CBC is an area within a fifteen mile radius of Cedar Creek including the Town of Essex in which American Crows have traditionally had a winter roost. Area 2 of the CBC extends from County Road 34 (Talbot Trail) south to Lake Erie.

Balkwill Lands Winter/Spring 2008 Wildlife Sightings

Bill Balkwill takes daily walks on his Lands, reporting the wildlife sightings in conversations with friends. During the first week of the New Year, both Bill Balkwill and Jack Balkwill reported large flocks of Snow Buntings in the vicinity of their Lands gravel entrance lane which has agricultural lands to both the east and west. Several dark birds within the flocks were thought to be Lapland Longspurs.

Mid February 2008 Update on Balkwill Lands

Owner Bill Balkwill reported that he saw the tracks of a mink this past third week of February 2008. The tracks in the snow were large, likely indicating a male.

Late Winter Sightings on Balkwill Lands

Bill Balkwill reported that on March 3, 2008, a dozen American Robins were seen with a flock of European Starlings. The shape of the Robins caught Bil's attention as they perched in trees near the patio.

Bill Balkwill reports a single Turkey Vulture in the neighborhood on March 22, 2008. Two Killdeer were also observed. Snow fell overnight, approximately 10 cm.
