Balkwill Lands Monitoring Underway

The Balkwill Lands Conservation Agreement was registered on-line April 13, 2007. One might think that the Land Trust could take a little breather but that was not to be the case as plans needed to be made with regard to monitoring the Balkwill Lands. Two CSLT and ECFNC members, Karen Cedar and Shirley Grondin, offered to be the Land Trust’s first monitoring team.

Balkwill Woods Walk, October 14, 2007

Twenty-four persons joined Bill Balkwill on October 14, 2007 for a fall colour walk in the Balkwill Woodland. Bill pointed out the Ohio Buckeye in the arboretum which was just beginning to show red tips on its leaves. Along the Old Logging Road, the Sassafras thicket was beginning to display a little colour.

Balkwill Lands Observations Summer/Fall 2007

Owner Bill Balkwill reported on July 25, 2007 that four White-tailed Deer had been observed in various areas of the Balkwill Lands. In the early morning a buck and doe were seen in the soya bean crop in front of the Balkwill home. Both animals were large with yellowish colouration.

Ojibway Prairie Walk and Supper, June 16, 2007

Canada South Land Trust friends and members gathered at 4:00 p.m. at the Ojibway Nature Centre for a prairie walk and supper on June 16, 2007. Our guide was Kristen Fawdry who introduced us to prairie plants during a tour of the demonstration garden just at the Nature Centre’s entrance.
