Canada South Land Trust Activities December 2006 – May 2007

In December 2006 a generous donation was received from the Women of the Great Lakes Basin to be used toward the work of the Canada South Land Trust.

Directors received the latest draft of the Balkwill Baseline Documentation Report at the January 2007 monthly directors meeting. This document is based on a new template provided by the Ontario Land Trust Alliance. Additional photography of perimeters and drains was completed in November 2007 using the template outline.

In February, an integrated Plan of Survey was received by the Land Trust from the surveyors of the Balkwill Lands which included UTM coordinates and which will be an important part of the Balkwill Baseline Documenta- tion Report.

The fourth Annual General Meeting of the Land Trust was held on March 1, 2007 in the Essex Civic Centre with Tom Preney, Ojibway Nature Centre staff person, as guest speaker.

In March 2007, the documents related to the Balkwill Conservation Agreement were prepared for signatures of owners Bill Balkwill and Jack Backwill and CSLT directors Tom Hurst and Betty Learmouth. On April 13, 2007 the Balkwill Conservation Agreement was registered electronically.

Directors David Ainslie and Betty Learmouth (along with the Land Trust's table top display) attended the 7th Annual Thames River Symposium held in Chatham on April 14, 2007 which featured a series of talks on the history of Thames River. Nikki May of the Carolinian Canada Coalition announced that a natural heritage fact brochure will be prepared for Essex County, similar to one prepared for the Municipality of Chatham-Kent in 2006.

Directors David Ainslie and Betty Learmouth attended Earth Day held on April 22, 2007 at MicMac Park in the City of Windsor. The Land Trust's table top board and bucket raffle were on display.

A walk at the Balkwill Woods was held on April 29, 2007 with fifty persons attending. Bill Balkwill pro- vided a guided tour of the Old Logging Road, the pond and several of the lanes. Local newspapers including the Essex Free Press and The Kingsville Reporter printed articles before and after the event.
