Mark your calendar for Sunday, May 14, 2006 as the Essex County Field Naturalists’ Club and the Canada South Land Trust have arranged for a walk in the Balkwill Woods lead by landowner Bill Balkwill. This is a special event as part of Doors Open to Nature to celebrate Ontario Nature’s 75th year of conserving nature in Ontario.
On the walk to be lead by Bill Balkwill, participants will view an Old Logging Road which is a reminder of earlier times when logs were moved through the area to two local mills. Nearby is a pond and tallgrass prairie restoration site where participants may glimpse Wood Ducks which have occupied nest boxes at the pond.
The woodland is easy to explore as a series of lanes allow easy walking and viewing of the woodland. Tree species will be discussed and vascular plant species will be identified. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes or hiking boots. The walk will be approximately two hours in length.
Directions: From Essex proceed south along the Arner Townline (County Road 23) to Road 2 West on your left in the Town of Kingsville. Turn left at this intersection and drive east watching for house number 1880 on your left. Proceed down the lane for parking. Meet at 2:00 p.m.
